Man when I look at all the Goombas here I think of TheLonelyGoomba on YouTube. His show's great :) and it makes me wish he was here somewhere as a cameo!
So yeah they go exploring for a bit and unlock a new move. But it's a curse! Reminds me of the guy in Zelda 3 and 4 who gets revenge by letting you carry more stuff :)
